Probation Officer

The probation officer, under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator, investigates offender personal history, background and environment; reports findings to the court and is prepared to make appropriate recommendations on dispositions; periodically interviews probationers to determine the effectiveness of probation supervision and areas in which casework counseling are needed; refers probationers to social resources in the community for assistance in rehabilitation; enforces court orders; recommends revoking of probation and/or modification of court orders when necessary.

Essential job functions include supervising referred defendants and offenders in accordance with standards of the Department of Criminal Justice Services and the conditions of supervision, ensuring defendant and offender compliance with all orders of the court, conducting substance abuse screenings, generating and maintaining files on defendants and offenders, preparing correspondence to courts, facilitating placement of offenders in education and/or treatment programs, conducting criminal history/background checks, seeking a capias from any judicial officer in the event of the defendant or offender's failure to comply with conditions of supervision as appropriate, seeking show cause petitions for cases requiring a subsequent hearing before the court, ensuring the timely flow of all case information and correspondence, assisting in developing and/or monitoring community service sites which serve as suitable locations for completing court mandated service, completing reports on each case to notify the court of the defendant or offender's compliance or noncompliance, appearing and testifying in court as requested, ensuring compliance with state and local standards, entering and maintaining case file information in PTCC (case management program), and performing other related duties as required.

Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree in the Criminal Justice, Human Services or a related field with one to two years of experience in the same; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Specialized certifications may be required depending on area of assignment. Requires a valid driver's license.
