Job Duties:
The Virginia Beach Police Public Affairs Office consist of a team of three and is looking to add an additional member. The goal of the PAO is to advance the mission of VBPD, enhance the department's brand, and engage with key stakeholders internally and externally.
In its role, the MCCIII will assist with the media relations load by
- Developing strategies and procedures for working effectively with the media.
- Maintaining good working relationships with media organizations.
- Preparing news releases, speeches, articles, social media posts, and other materials for public consumption.
- Collaborating with executive management and the Public Affairs team to ensure a cohesive public image.
- Working with various teams to organize and host public events and promotions.
- Speaking directly to the public or media to address questions and represent the organization.
- Planning and hosting press conferences to announce major news or address crises.
- Responding to media inquiries
- Take turns being on-call for after-hours incidents.
- Assist with media training for the department.

Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.
Official City Job Description:Working Conditions:Minimum Requirements:MINIMUMS: Requires a Bachelors degree and three (3) years in the fields of public relations, communications, marketing, or journalism OR related equivalent combination of education (above high school level) and/or experience equivalent to seven (7) years. Must have a current and valid drivers license. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the Citys operational status.

Preferences:Highly developed writing and verbal communication skills
Experience managing social media platforms to ensure a positive organizational presence
Experience serving as a media spokesperson for a business entity
Experience developing and executing marketing/public relations strategies
Experience as a supervisor or team lead
Experience with the workings of a law enforcement/public safety agency
Experience performing research
High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office and other computer applications
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced office environment
Strong organizational skills
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
Strong customer service skills
Bachelor's/Master's degree in Film and Media Studies, Broadcasting and Digital Media, Film, Television, and Video Production, and Visual and Sound Media or related field preferred.
Special Instructions:Candidates are encouraged to provide detailed information about their experience and qualifications as it relates to serving in a public relations/communications role as well as leveraging social media platforms in their communications plan.

CJIS/VCIN/NCIC certification is required, in addition to the successful completion of a background check, candidates must have U.S. citizenship or be a lawful resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
