Fleet Technician

The City of Hampton's Public Works Fleet division is looking for a Fleet Technician to work in our Light Shop on 2nd shift! Are you looking for a role where your technical skills truly matter? As part of our team, you'll perform advanced maintenance and repair on a wide range of vehicles and equipment, focusing on police pursuit vehicles, light trucks, sedans, and SUVs. This position works the following schedule: Monday-Friday, 3pm - 11:30pm.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Vocational, technical or trade school training in automotive technology preferred.
  • Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience in the repair and maintenance for the class of vehicles in the shop you are assigned.
  • Experience must have included preventative maintenance checks, computerized diagnostics, and complex electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic troubleshooting.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
  • Must be a Certified as a Motor Vehicle Inspector, licensed by the State of Virginia, or the ability to pass the requirements to obtain license within 120-days.
  • Must obtain and maintain one (1) ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification for the class of equipment in your shop within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
  • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City's current substance abuse policy.
  • Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements

  • Must possess a complete set of automotive mechanic tools at all times while in this position.
  • The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
