Fabrication Helper (2nd Shift) - Steel America
Purpose:
Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Fabrication Helper to support CNC plasma burn table operations in Norfolk, VA. This position has an expected start date of February 2, 2026.
* This position will work 2nd shift (general hours are Mon-Fri 3:00pm-11:30pm, subject to change based on work need).
Job Description:
* Maintain specifications by observing and cutting, including taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
* Operate and maintain one or more burning machines to burn plates in various shapes.
* Select and setup tooling.
* Bend/Form parts and inspect/compare to blue prints.
* Operation of CNC computer driven burning machine in a safe and efficient manner.
* Operation of non-computerized track burning machine in a safe and efficient manner.
* Must be able to select correct burning tips and/or gasses and pressure to complete the job effectively.
* Ability to read and understand work orders and fill out correctly.
* Operation of plasma or flame-cutting torches when required.
* Effectively use all tools associated with performing duties including reading tape measures, calipers, etc.
* Operation of all equipment needed in workstation such as overhead and wall cranes, hand torches, etc..
* Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
* Maintain equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
* Document actions by completing production and quality logs.
* Read work instructions to determine material to pull for burn job and locate the material in the warehouse.
* Ensure the correct burn tip and gas settings are used on the machine.
* Enter proper program into computer for machine burning specifications.
* Set up, operate, or tend burn machines that cut material to specified dimensions.
* Inspect and measure work pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes to ensure the quality of parts.
Qualifications:
* Must have a HS diploma or equivalent.
* Must demonstrate basic levels of mathematical, reading, writing and communication skills necessary to successfully accomplish the job description, skills and ability requirements as outlined above.
* Must be able to enter and move through manholes to reach and work internally confined spaces.
* Must be a steady, reliable worker with regular, reliable attendance.
Desired Qualifications:
* One (1) year of experience operating CNC equipment in a steel service center or fabrication environment preferred.
* Experience with the use of tools and equipment including, but not limited to: come-a longs, hydraulic jacks, wedges, dogs, speed wrenches, planes, saws, chain falls, bandsaws, turn buckles, grinders, and sheers preferred.
* General knowledge of NAVSEA standards, ABS and ASME rules preferred.
* Prefer some technical training.
* Prefer new Aircraft Carrier Construction experience.
* Prefer new Submarine Construction experience.
Travel Requirements:
* Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
* Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
* Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
* May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
* Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
* Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
* Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
* While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
* Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation.
* Frequent use of respirator.
* Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
