Associate General Counsel - Litigation

Location: This role requires associates to be in-office 3 days per week, fostering collaboration and connectivity, while providing flexibility to support productivity and work‑life balance. This approach combines structured office engagement with the autonomy of virtual work, promoting a dynamic and adaptable workplace. Alternate locations may be considered.

The Associate General Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice and strategic counsel on complex, high‑impact litigation, and related projects. Focus of work is on large scale and/or high financial level projects with broad department and/or organizational impact and moderate level of risk. Works as a strategic partner and decision maker with more senior leaders and manages work independently. A key focus of this position will be managing Medicaid litigation and advising business client on related legal and regulatory matters.

How you will make an impact:

  • Provide strategic legal advice and actionable recommendations that align with business objectives and mitigate risk.
  • Lead and manage Medicaid litigation, including coordination with outside counsel, internal stakeholders, and budgets to achieve favorable outcomes.
  • Applies knowledge of one or more legal specialties with sound business acumen and knowledge of the business goals and objectives as they relate to the legal matter at hand.
  • Determines methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate legal projects.
  • Contributes to overall results of an SBU or CEE unit and/or department.
  • Uses professional legal concepts and principles to contribute to development of company's concepts and principles.
  • May possess deep technical knowledge or broader scope of knowledge.
  • Provides instructions to junior members of the department and concise, timely briefings to senior level business and legal management.
  • Routinely works on complex problems in which analysis of situations and/or facts require an in‑depth evaluation of various factors.
  • Serves as a resource for other attorneys and paralegals as well as business clients instructing and advising on technical and tactical issues.
  • Assesses and mitigates risk. Reports to management any identified business exposure and associated risks as well as mitigation techniques being utilized.

Minimum Requirements:

Requires a JD, current license to practice law, and a minimum of 9 years of specific industry and/or technical legal experience post licensure; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.

Preferred Skills, Capabilities and Experiences:

  • Experience managing outside counsel strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience advising on high‑stakes, complex legal matters with broad organizational impact.
  • Experience in Medicaid preferred.

For candidates working in person or virtually in the below location(s), the salary* range for this specific position is $187,616 to $307,008.

Locations: New York, NY; Chicago, IL

  • The salary range is the range Elevance Health in good faith believes is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future and actual compensation may vary from posting based on geographic location, work experience, education and/or skill level. Even within the range, the actual compensation will vary depending on the above factors as well as market/business considerations. Elevance Health operates in a Hybrid Workforce Strategy.
