Overview

High School Adviser in Hampton, VA 23668. The Educational Talent Search (ETS) program is a federal TRIO program funded through the U.S. Department of Education to make college accessible to first-generation and low-income students. The ETS program at Hampton University provides academic, career, and financial counseling to eligible middle and high school students to encourage graduation and post-secondary education. ETS at Hampton University includes a Middle School Component (serving 6th8th grade students in five target schools) and a High School Component (serving eligible 9th12th graders in four Hampton City High Schools). The program offers eligible students annual college tours, Financial Aid and Financial Literacy seminars, career exploration, and academic workshops. The High School Adviser provides college access resources for Talent Search participants and their families. Advisers are responsible for the success of a cohort of 270 students through academic advising, outreach, program recruitment, and assisting in program planning/management at assigned school sites. High School Advisers will be based at two school sites four days a week through the academic year.

COMPENSATION: This is a grant-funded position. Continuation of the position is contingent upon the continuation of related grant funding.

Examples of Duties

The High School Adviser is a full-time, 12-month employee who reports to the Program Director and performs the following duties:

  • Recruit eligible students into the Talent Search program and develop and implement targeted academic interventions for eligible students.
  • Make presentations to student groups and help students apply for admission and secure financial aid for postsecondary education, including information on scholarships, loans, grants, work study, and other financial assistance programs.
  • Facilitate program using online technologies including Zoom, Google Classroom, social media platforms, etc.
  • Coordinate and implement counseling services and activities that assist students in their adjustment to the high school and college environment.
  • Administer assessments and help students with course selection.
  • Plan and coordinate college tours and social and cultural excursions.
  • Advise students on effective study skills, time management, test-taking techniques, and financial aid policies and deadlines.
  • Regularly monitor students academic progress and make appropriate interventions and referrals.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director to maintain reports on students semester and annual academic performance, and conduct exit interviews with graduates.
  • Enter student and parent activity data through a web-based, password-protected, encrypted system linked to the Blume database; update records with notes, milestones, parent records, or other data.
  • Review grades, course-taking patterns, and attendance to ensure progress toward performance measures.
  • Evening and weekend work required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work with students from low-income, first-generation college backgrounds and students with disabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, work in a self-directed environment, and plan and organize daily and long-term tasks.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the goals and objectives of the Talent Search program.
