ODU is seeking candidates for an Assistant Director for Videography and Photography (full-time, 12 month) position. The position plays a key role in supporting the mission of the university and the division by helping to execute the integrated marketing communications plan. This position creates and leads the University Communication's still and motion picture strategy and production of photography and videography assets to enhance the University's reputation, student recruitment, and brand image in alignment with University standards. This includes working directly with and supervising photographers and videographers who deliver still imagery and digital marketing video acquisition. The position collaborates with faculty, staff, and departments to identify video needs and develop project scope including production timelines and budget. This position presents compelling stories and key messages through video and photography and maximizes the quality and frequency of marketing videos and strategy for digital consumption including but not limited to social media, broadcast, or streaming. Using advanced knowledge of visual storytelling, this position uses creative thinking to create original still and video assets to promote the University.
Required Education: Master's Degree in Film, Marketing, Advertising, Journalism, Communications, Business Administration or other related field, or a Bachelor's degree with Master's equivalent of experience in previously mentioned fields.
Required Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of visual branding and storytelling strategies and tactics as part of an integrated communications strategy.
- Considerable technical knowledge and experience of the principles of analogue and digital video capture.
- Considerable knowledge and experience of effective customer service and problem- resolution techniques when serving diverse customers.
- Working knowledge and familiarity with DSLR equipment.
- Some knowledge of still photography skills.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills including writing interview questions and video scripts, and communicating complex subjects in a compelling, expressive and creative manner.
- Strong project management skills to effectively work on short projects with tight deadlines as well as long-term video campaigns that require multiple shoots, scheduling, and editing.
- Proficient skill in the operation of production equipment including video cameras and recorders, audio recording equipment.
- Proficient skill in the operation of video editing software and/or web-based video applications.
- Proficient skill in the operation of drone videography and photography.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain effective relationships with University departments, faculty, staff, and students and outside vendors, agencies and contacts.
- Must hold an FAA Part 107 Small UAS Rule (Part 107) drone remote pilot license or be willing to study for the exam and obtain the license and any necessary state of Virginia certificates or licenses within six months of employment.
- Considerable experience with non-linear digital editing software such as, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or Avid to piece raw footage into a cohesive video story.
- Considerable experience operating video cameras and camera controls, ensuring the proper selection of shutter speeds, apertures, lens types, filters and effects.
- Working experience in management of photography and/or videography personnel.
- Working experience developing and executing visual storytelling strategies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some international travel experience preferred.
- Some experience in a collegiate setting is preferred.
- Certifications from AMGA, PCIA, or ACA.
