Base pay range
$110,000.00/yr - $125,000.00/yr
The Director of Maintenance oversees all bus maintenance activities in Operations, including planning, organizing, and implementing functions related to the daily and long-term operation and maintenance of HRT's bus fleet, operational facilities, NS/SS storerooms, and non-revenue vehicles. The role provides leadership and support to staff managers responsible for bus maintenance, fleet support, non-revenue vehicles, and facilities, ensuring departmental functions meet customer needs. The Director collaborates closely with senior management across various departments.
Essential Job Functions:
- Achieve departmental goals, monitor progress, and report results to the Chief Transit Operations Officer, taking corrective actions as needed.
- Ensure all systems, including Radio, Fare Collection, and Shop Equipment, are functional and maintained.
- Maintain sufficient operational vehicles and ensure they are serviced and ready for daily service.
- Implement quality control measures, develop systems for compliance with maintenance and safety procedures, and oversee external contractors' maintenance activities.
- Manage the maintenance and repair of buses, non-revenue vehicles, fareboxes, and radio systems.
- Evaluate and select external vendors and contractors, overseeing procurement activities and strategic sourcing.
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures to reduce costs and streamline operations.
- Manage the department budget, develop annual plans, and ensure expenses stay within parameters.
- Coordinate projects with other departments to meet design, maintenance, and construction requirements.
- Ensure managers have activity plans, SOPs, budgets, and test plans as required.
- Verify safety certification compliance and integrate safety and quality into responsibilities.
- Maintain records per policies and ensure a safe and healthy work environment, complying with safety regulations.
Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Effective communication skills in English, both oral and written.
- Ability to work effectively in an operating and unionized environment.
- Knowledge of operating, maintenance, and safety rules for bus, rail, and ferry operations.
Software Skills:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic problem-solving skills related to software applications used in the role.
Safety Responsibility:
Perform duties safely, promote safety awareness, and ensure compliance with safety policies to protect employees, contractors, and the public.
Training/Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Business/Management, technical schooling, and certifications.
Experience:
At least 15 years of progressive management experience in transit or transportation operations, including 10 years in project or management roles involving technical systems. Experience in managing engineering projects and technical staff is preferred. Equivalent education and experience may be considered.
Licenses/Certificates:
Valid Driver's License required; must obtain Virginia Driver's License within 60 days if out of state.
Additional Requirements:
- Position classified as essential personnel.
- Must pass federal background screening for military installation access.
